Death Stranding: Unger
The military history matters because it explains the specific shape of what Unger became after the Stranding β the discipline, the operational clarity, the ability to function inside catastrophe without being dissolved by it. Special Forces training is preparation for operating without support in hostile environments, which is to say it is preparation for the world Sam is moving through. Unger's past is the reason he is still useful, the reason Bridges values him, the reason Sam can rely on him in the field.
But the military past is also the thing that limits Unger. He was trained to achieve objectives by force, to clear territory, to solve problems through the application of organized violence. The Stranding is not a problem that violence solves. The beach does not respond to force. The BTs cannot be fought in the way an enemy soldier can be fought. Unger's great competence is built for a world that no longer exists, and the game is patient about showing what that costs him.
