Death Stranding: Heartman Lab Visit

The alarm is the detail that makes Heartman's condition comprehensible as a life rather than a premise. He dies every 21 minutes, the heart stopping, the brief crossing to the beach, the return. The alarm is not a medical device — it is a schedule, the management of an impossible situation through the application of routine. Heartman has turned his involuntary crossings into research, using each brief death as data collection, building a life around the certainty of the recurring event.

The lab visit is the game's most overtly philosophical session — Heartman as the character who has thought most systematically about what the Stranding means, who has built an entire theory of the extinction event from the vantage point of someone who crosses the boundary with metronomic regularity. Sam listens because he has no framework for this. Heartman listens because Sam is the latest data point in a research project that the beach keeps extending.
