Death Stranding: Sam Strand

The two choices are the game's thesis made explicit β€” extinction or continuation, the Stranding completing itself or being reversed, the world ending or the door being closed and the living world restored to its separation from the beach. Amelie can do either. She is an Extinction Entity, the embodiment of the Stranding made human, and the choice she presents Sam with is the choice she has been unable to make herself because she loves the world too much to end it and cannot find a reason to save it.

Sam is the reason. Sam has always been the reason β€” not because he is special in the cosmic sense that the game's mythology gestures toward, but because he is specific, because he is a person Amelie loves in the particular way that matters, because his existence is the argument that the world contains things worth preserving. He gives her the reason she needs. The door closes. The beach recedes. The strands hold.
