Death Stranding: BB's Story

The cremation order is the system failing in the exact way that the system was designed to fail β€” a BB that has served its purpose being disposed of, the operational asset becoming the disposed material, the tool being destroyed because the tool is no longer useful. BB-28 is Lou's designation in the Bridges records. Sam is the operative. The failure to save him is the beach crossing, the separation, the moment that the operational relationship the system defined became the personal one that the system cannot account for.

The cremation order is what Sam is racing against in the game's final movement. The story it tells in doing so is the story the entire game has been building toward β€” not the reconnection of America, not the closing of the extinction, not the cosmological resolution of the Stranding's cause. The story is about a porter and a BB and the specific form of love that develops when two people spend enough time on the road together. The system orders the cremation. Sam does not let it happen.
