The ghost identity arrives not as a choice but as a consequence. Jin does not decide to become a legend that the Mongols fear. He simply keeps surviving in ways that a samurai should not be able to survive, and the stories spread on their own. The ghost is what happens when a man refuses to die for a code that is killing his people.

What is lost is harder to name. It is not honor in the abstract. It is the specific self that Lord Shimura built — the boy who believed that the right way of doing things was also the effective way, that virtue and victory were aligned. The man who emerges from the early sessions of Ghost of Tsushima still loves his uncle, still carries the samurai inside him. But he can no longer pretend the two things are compatible.
