Ghost of Yotei (Part 9)

The fire as education β€” the specific pedagogy of catastrophic loss, the thing it teaches that nothing else can. Atsu does not operate within the samurai honor code the way Jin did. Her relationship to honor was severed on the same night her relationship to her family was severed, and what the fire taught her instead is the language of loss: the vocabulary of absence, the grammar of what remains after everything you loved has been taken.

The game's parallel with Ghost of Tsushima is deliberate and inverted. Jin abandoned honor to save Tsushima. Atsu never had the luxury of honor as a framework β€” it was taken before she was old enough to fully inhabit it. What she has instead is the promise, which is more durable because it was forged in the fire rather than in ceremony.
