God of War (Part 5)

Five hours. The longest session in the playthrough and the one where everything accelerates — Atreus learning what he is, the boy's illness, the journey to Helheim, the revelation of Kratos's past arriving in the worst possible way. Atreus finds out his father is a god. The knowledge does not make him feel safer. It makes him dangerous, the arrogance of divine lineage briefly overwriting the boy Kratos had been raising.

The world needing fewer monsters is the game at its most direct. The gods have been making monsters of each other for millennia — Odin's paranoia, Freya's overcorrection, Baldur's curse, Thor's brutality. Kratos arrived in this mythology carrying the same capacity for monstrousness. The five hours of this session are the game asking whether a monster who knows what he is can choose not to be it, and whether a boy who just discovered what he might become can learn from the choosing.
