The Last of Us: Alone And Forsaken

Henry and Sam introduce the game's question about companionship most directly — two brothers surviving together, the younger one infected at the session's end, the older one unable to live with what the infection requires. Joel does not do company because company creates obligations and obligations create exposure and exposure creates the specific kind of loss that the prologue taught him was not survivable.

Talking too much is the infection vector for hope. People who talk reveal what they care about, and what they care about becomes leverage, and leverage in this world is a vulnerability. Joel has been quiet for twenty years. The game is observing the cost.
