The Last of Us: Sewers & Suburbs
Ellie's voice. She was born two years after the outbreak β she has no before, no pre-infection world to measure the current one against. What other children of her generation learned about childhood, she learned about survival. The fighter she became is not a trauma response to a lost normality. It is what she was made to be by the only world she has known.
The game uses this to construct the specific dynamic between Joel and Ellie: he is haunted by a world she never had, and she is competent in the world he cannot fully accept. They need different things from each other and provide different things, and the relationship that forms is in that gap.
