The Last of Us: The Firefly Lab & Jackson

The hospital. The choice. The lie. Jackson. The walls Joel has been building since Sarah's death β€” the emotional walls, the professional distance, the refusal of connection β€” are what the Firefly lab required him to finally commit to or dismantle. He dismantled them for Ellie and then rebuilt them in a different form: the protective lie, the version of reality that keeps her safe and keeps him the person who can live with what he did.

Trapping yourself is what the protection produces. Joel chose Ellie over the world. The wall that keeps that choice safe is also the wall that makes honest relationship impossible. The game ends before the wall comes down. The sequel begins with what happens when it does.
