The specific moral texture of survival at institutional scale, where the right thing is not obvious and the wrong thing has become normalized through repetition. Tess's apartment, the Fireflies, the introduction of Ellie as cargo.

The epigram's voice is Tess's or Joel's interior — the survivor's specific negotiation with ethics, the reminder that the pragmatic choice can still carry some moral weight if you are careful about which pragmatic choices you make. She won't feel anything is the mercy encoded in ruthlessness, the last thing a person who has not entirely abandoned decency tells themselves before they do what survival requires.
