As Dusk Falls (Part One)

The Desert Dream motel, 1998 — the Holt family's botched robbery, the Walkers arriving at exactly the wrong time, the hostage situation that will define the next two families' decades. As Dusk Falls is organized around the specific violence of secrets held and truths suppressed, the way the things people decline to say become the loudest things in the room. Vince Walker's secrets, Jay Holt's secrets, the Holt family's history that brought them to this motel — they are all present in the first session, compressing into the particular silence before everything becomes noise.

The game's visual style — the illustrated tableau format — makes the secrets literal: static images of people holding things behind their faces, the gaps between what is shown and what is happening the game's formal statement about what the story is actually about.
