The second part β the timeline expanding forward, the 1998 night casting its shadow across the years that follow. The motel as the permanent location in both families' psychologies, the event that restructured everything without being discussed, is the game's most precise image of what trauma does to the people inside it. The locks changing is the game's account of how the past holds people: not with the same mechanism, but with the same effect. The Walkers think they have moved on. The Holts think they have moved on. The motel disagrees.
