Death Stranding 2 (Part 7)

The long haul. The session that tests whether the player has internalized the game's fundamental proposition β€” that the walk itself is the content, that the incremental progress across difficult terrain is not the prelude to meaning but the thing itself. One foot in front of the other is not a reduction. It is the complete description of what survival requires and what the game asks you to do with it.

Sam talks to himself on the long routes because the silence would be heavier than the cargo. The self-instruction is a form of presence, a way of staying in the body and in the moment when the landscape offers nothing but the next step. It is also, the game suggests, a form of courage β€” the courage that has no drama, no audience, no moment of transformation. Just the next step taken.
