He called it salvation is how every zealot describes what they are doing: the goal is holy, the means are justified by the goal, the people in the way are obstacles to grace rather than people with their own claims on existence. Obsession with a golden face is Lara's reading, the archaeologist's eye seeing the object behind the theology, the thing being worshipped for what it is rather than what it represents.
